Kitchen with Breakfast Nook Addition
The renovation of the kitchen occurred
at the same time as the addition on the back of the house. We pulled up
the existing faux wood floor and laid a new wood floor. We added the pendant
lights over the new island, along with all new hand-made Amish cabinetry, new
countertops, and the striking copper vent hood highlighted in the pictures below
and to the right.

The kitchen was originally without
an island. The kitchen table was against the wall where the refrigerator
now sits, severely limiting space in the room. However, we recessed the
new fridge further back into the wall, so it no longer takes up space in the
room, and added cabinets above for extra storage, while adding on a breakfast
nook, which can be seen below, so that the kitchen table could be moved into a
new space to make room for the smaller-but-more-functional island.
As you can see in the picture on the right, we also installed the microwave in the custom-made cabinetry, which opens up the countertop space below.
These two pictures are of the new breakfast nook in the addition.
The house originally ended where the cased opening between the existing kitchen and the new breakfast nook now is. We added about eight feet to the house. The window in the addition in the picture on the left is an original window from the house. Other windows on this level of the addition were matched with Kolbe and Kolbe double-hung wood windows. You can see the accent lighting we added on the side of the doorway leading to the kitchen. There is a matching light on the other side. Plus, you can see the new fan and light fixture, and the pendant light hanging at the new back door. You can just barely see the clothes closet just past the back door.
In creating the addition, we were able to also move the laundry room from the basement to this level of the house by adding the utility room you see below.
The new pantry cabinets seen here match the new kitchen cabinetry and were installed where the existing pantry had been.
